Uppark House and Gardens: a tranquil and intimate 18th-century house
This gem on the South Downs, rescued after a major fire in 1989, houses an elegant Georgian interior with a famous Grand Tour collection. An 18th-century dolls’ house with original contents, is one of the highlights.
The complete servants’ quarters in the basement are shown as they were in Victorian days when H. G. Wells’ mother was housekeeper.
The beautiful and peaceful garden is now fully restored in the early 19th-century Picturesque style, in a downland and woodland setting.

Uppark House and Gardens: Discover the house
Our house contains 18th-century collections and Victorian servants’ quarters which have survived in their original setting, including French furniture, Italian paintings and French pottery.
Our vision was to restore Uppark, following a major fire in 1989, to its appearance the day before the fire.

As well as gifts and books from the our own ranges, the shop reflects the stunning location high on the South Downs by featuring local suppliers from the region.
These include tasty jams and preserves from Payne’s Southdown Bee Farms, English wines from Lurgashall Winery, gourmet salad dressings from Sussex Gold and real ales from the award-winning Ballard’s Brewery, situated in the village of Nyewood just 3 miles away.
